our advice for diy brides

01.

Contact us at least 8-12 weeks before your wedding date to check what flowers are in season and to make booking + payment arrangements.

02.

Plan to collect your flowers a day or two before the wedding. Collect them in a closed vehicle with air conditioning, especially if your wedding is taking place in summer.

03.

Do not try and do it all yourself. It would be best if you had a team to help you arrange your florals, as flowers take time, lots of effort and energy. Prepare your flowers the day before your wedding.

04.

At the venue: make sure you have lots of buckets, half-filled with clean water. Make sure to add a flower preservative.
Flowers need to be kept in a cool place. Create a working area, put a large canvas or plastic sheet on the ground under the work tables. You will need oasis or chicken wire to add structure and support to your vases, tape to secure it, a few pairs of sharp garden secateurs, and a team of people to help you. Always have a “flower toolbox” of pins, cable ties, wire, pliers, florists glue and tape, a hammer, and some nails.

Ensure your team works neatly; otherwise, when they’re all tired, you’re going to be left to clean up a huge mess. A cleanup team is always a win and worth every cent!

Frequently Asked Questions

Before you decide on whether our bulk flower service is for you, we encourage you to consider the following questions:

Do you have enough time?

The week of your wedding can be a hectic time for many couples, and it’s easy to underestimate the time you’ll need to complete your floral designs – from flower pickup and preparation to final setup and placements at your event. Make sure you have sufficient time and help to complete the tasks at hand.

Do you have enough people to put together the arrangements?

Floral design for weddings isn’t something you’ll want to tackle alone… especially beginners. We typically have a team of three experienced designers working on wedding flowers for 2-3 days prior to weddings.

Do you have work space to do the design work?

Floral design is messy work; you’ll need a space that is cool, has access to water and where it won’t matter if the space gets wet and dirty from all the cut leaves and stems. Remember to get a few more hands to clean up as you work.

Do you have the tools you will need?

You’ll need heavy-duty clippers/garden secateurs, oasis, vases, trays, wire and more.

If you have answered ‘yes’ to all these questions, then DIY designs with fresh, local, seasonal flowers from Farmgirl Flowers can be a great option for you!

The number of stems will vary and will depend on what the varieties are that are in bloom at that time. We estimate that the buckets will have approximately 60-80 stems.

Yes, you will need to order at least R3000 worth of flowers.

The number of arrangements will depend on your design and your vases. As a reference, you could fill 5-7 quart-size mason jars with one bucket, depending on how full and lush you make them.
Our bulk flower offering and special pricing is for mixed colours only. If you have a specific colour palette you’d like us to stick to, we will do our best to accommodate your request (for example, no oranges or reds), but due to our small scale and our other event design work, we charge a premium to supply colour-specific buckets.
If you have a particular favourite, we will do our best to accommodate you, but our bulk flowers are purely seasonal and reflect what is in bloom at that time. Some premium luxury flowers will likely wind up in your bucket, but specific flowers should be ordered by the stem or by the bunch (ten stems per bunch).
We can sell flowers to you by the stem or by the bunch. Availability of these flowers varies week to week throughout our growing season.
It depends on the variety and the way that you treat them, but most of our blooms last between 7-14 days.
Refrigeration is recommended by not required. If you don’t have access to a large coldroom, store them in a cool room with an air conditioner on, out of direct sunlight and away from food and pets. Be aware of the heat factor in our South African summers.
For Saturday weddings, most clients pick flowers up from the farm on Thursday mornings, but with enough advanced notice, we may be able to accommodate your schedule. NOTE: Flowers should be transported in an air-conditioned vehicle such as a van or large SUV that has seats that fold down flat. Flowers CANNOT be transported in the back of vans or trucks! If you don’t have access to a large air-conditioned vehicle, delivery can be arranged with at least two weeks’ notice. Delivery fees vary depending on the distance.
